Artist Biography

 Stefan Gevers

People tend to see Watercolour as a traditional form of art that doesn’t allow for growth, uniqueness, and openness to change.

Tradition creates a sense of comfort which leads to repetition, mediocre work and limits our freedom to be creative.

When we are contemporary in our thinking, we become more stimulated and follow our passion without compromise.

This allows us to create work that is an authentic extension of our own unique self.

---

Stefan Gevers takes a contemporary approach to working with watercolour.  His work is inspired by many road trips through country Australia and his interest in the natural environment & delicate shifting patterns in nature are often a starting point for his work. Inspired by timing, repetition and movement and the inherent patterns within that. While most paintings are abstract or abstracted, it refers to the landscape and retains a strong figurative link and a defined horizon line.

---

Stefan’s work has been collected by the Victorian & Queensland State Libraries, Artbank the NAB collection, Peter McCallum and numerous private collections throughout Australia and Europe. He has been awarded the Yerring Station Sculpture prize & the Banyule Art Prize "environment Award.

Stefan exhibits widely as a solo artist and as part of collaborative exhibitions.

Exert from Panorama Essay

"He knows what he wants to say and has found his medium, predominantly watercolour, which he handles as though the stuff is in his bloodstream. He is aware that it’s not about mastering the medium. Instead, he recognises clearly what watercolour wants to do all by itself and has learned to collaborate with it, to work in tandem – artist and medium – so that the outcome rewards both. Balance and unity are not just properties of composition but of process as well. So, good painting is really a love affair."
